Tom Hanks also starred in the film "The code of Dan Vince ", “The Terminal ", "Saving Private Ryan "and so on. In a number of stars in Hollywood, who can act the very sympathetic "gay", and also the simple and honest "low-energy child," and the "Astronaut”, besides the incomparably brave "soldiers of World War II", and each movie is very popular? Tom - Hanks did. Tom born a baby face, he is not very handsome but very funny; any role he acts is unforgettable. He won the 1994 Academy Award for Best Actor Award. He is one of the most influential stars in Hollywood.
In the 1990s, the anti-intellectual sprit in America is very high. And then, the Hollywood produced a number of anti-intellectualism films. And "Forrest Gump " is the masterpiece of anti-intellectual films in this period. It is based on American writer Winston Glum’s best-selling novel of the same name. It describes the reflection of all aspects of American life through Gump whose IQ is in 75. The film shows us some important events in American social and political life in unique perspective. It makes Americans to re-examine the State and individuals in the past, and to reflect upon the nature of Americans. It re-affirmed the old moral and social subjects culture, promote the dominant ideology of the United States in 1960s. And at the same time, it negatives other avant-gardes culture. I think maybe because of this, Americans love it so much.
"Forrest Gump " makes us know about two men: Gump and Tom Hanks. Gump was shaped into the embodiment of virtue in the film. Although Gump’s IQ is a little lower than normal levels. He was honest, trustworthy, serious, and bold and places a very high value on feelings. He only knows how to pay without asking for anything, and never mind others refuse him. He was just open-minded, magnanimous in the face of life. He focuses all of his wisdom, faith and courage on one point, just run and run. Nothing is important to him but run. He kept running on the road on instinct. He ran over the classmates’ discrimination in childhood, ran the university"s football field, running through the fire swirling in the quagmire of the Vietnam War, ran ping-pong diplomacy over, the entire United States, and eventually went to his end. Gump never insist something or expect something, he just uses his simple and honest and pure to touch the world.
In the sky, a feather fly in the wind, drifting across treetops, fly toward blue sky.  And last, the feather falls on the feet of Forrest Gump. Gump sited on a bench in Alabama, talking about all his life.
Forrest Gump was born in Alabama, where is in South America, an isolated small town Shortly after World War II. He was born with mental retardation, with the IQ only in 75. However, Gump’s mother has a strong character and she hopes Gump lives as same as others. She always encourages Gump, tells Gump〝You are no different than anybody else is.〞Furthermore, Gump became friends with Jenny, and he can run, run very fast. Once in middle school, in order to avoid his classmates in pursuit, Gump ran into a school football field, because of his running fast, he was admitted into the university. And later he became a rugby star and met with President John F. Kennedy.
After graduation, encouraged by a recruit, Gump candidates took part in the Vietnam War. In a battle, his unit had been ambushed, when ordered to retreat, Gump remembered Jennifer"s orders, and he broke into a run. Moreover, Gump saved many of his comrades. But Bubba, the best friend of Gump’s who was enthusiastic about shrimp was died. And Lieutenant Taylor lost his legs.
After the war, Gump has been an audience with President Johnson"s.  At a peace rally, Gump met Jenny again, however, Jenny has fallen, lived a life of debauchery. Gump loves Jenny all along, yet Jenny has been not to accept him, they parted hastily rushed encounter.
As a ping-pong diplomacy envoy, Gump also went to China took part in table tennis, campaign for Sino-US relations. Under the guidance of the doctrine "say we should do", Forrest Gump finally found his own sky. He taught, "Elvis," Elvis Pulaisili study dance. He helped John Lennon writing songs. In the Civil Rights Movement, he collapsed in a hair-trigger large-scale ethnic conflict. He even inadvertently forced the thief sneaked into the Watergate building into the net of justice.
And moreover, Gump also made a fortune in strange combination of circumstances to become a billionaire. Because didn’t want be tired by fame or fortune, Gump became a gardener. Gump always missed Jenny; however Jenny had been led astray and caught in despair. Finally one day, Jenny came back, she lived with Gump for a period of time. And one evening, Jenny throws herself into the lap of Gump, and to leave quietly at the next day’s dawn. Years later, Gump met Jenny again, and a little boy who was Gump’s son. This time, Jennifer has got a kind of incurable disease. The three of they got back to their hometown, spent a happy time.
Janet passed away, and their son got to school age. One day, Gump sent his son to the school bus, at this time, a feather fall off from Gump’s son’s book, and fly away in the wind. Jenny is a symbol of degradation; she contracted almost all of the bad habits, such as drug addiction, sexual liberation and so on. Finally, she died of a virus - in fact imply that the HIV virus. But Forrest Gump does not count everything, always in love with her, reflects his innocence and goodness.
Gump just like a fighter, he seems silly, but in fact he was successes, he won the survival and development again and again. This is a hope of God rewards good, at the same time, it also includes a tone: forward, ran. It is said that such a run will bring hope. Virtually, the hopes exist indeed. This unique film has won so many viewers, attracting the audience only like an easy and even entertaining; it illustrates the hopes and aspirations of its own charming. Shaping the image of Forrest Gump, subverts the normal world of the heroic image, runs counter to the traditional concept, has a strong anti-tradition, anti-mainstream sexual. Gump’ experiences make many wise men pale by comparison.
I think the director just wanted to irony society and reflecting the social status quo come through shaping the image of Forrest Gump. Gump always has a group of trailing behind him, they could not find the answer to life. It can be said that this is a reality at that time in the U.S. society. People are disappointed with the reality, they could not find motivation and meaning of existence, and had to put the fate of their faith in other people.  On the contrary, Gump always faces the reality with optimism, runs with courage. This is a wonderful irony.
I really love this film. Everyone who watched Forrest Gump would gain a little sentiment. And to me, it makes me understand life is more beautiful than I ever think. Whoever we are, and whatever we do, we should believe ourselves, never give up and never think we are inferior to others. Gump"s mother once said "Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you"re gonna get. "In fact, this simple discourse contains a life attitudes that each person understand but difficult to achieve. And I think the film constantly to the audience about the different life to prove this sentence.
There are also many other wonderful movie lines, just like " Stupid is as stupid does." "Miracles happen every day." " I don’t know if we each have a destiny, or if we’re all just floating around accidental—like on a breeze. " "Death is just a part of life, something we’re all destined to do." "You are no different than anybody else is. " my heart was shocked by these affecting words .I was deeply moved by this film.
Life is filled with so much uncertainty. We should not to be Calm, optimistic, and positive to face the life. Perhaps your destiny is not very luck now, but who knows what will happen in the future, just be happy and don’t worried.

Forrest Gump

I really love the film, Forrest Gump, which brings me too much touching.

“Life is like a box of chocolates---You never know what you’re gonna get.” It’s the most classic line in American film Forrest Gump, as well as the main idea of this work, which emphasizes the process rather than the result of the decisive role of the life, stresses the simple and common attitudes toward life, and also tells us to learn to cherish and change.

The fundamental life philosophy of this movie inspires me to make such a thought: Although the majority people have the dream, but often only a few unremittingly make efforts to achieve it, so the final success always belongs to those minority people. Most people care too much about the results, and don’t know the results can only be created through the action, which will never drop automatically or pre-exist. So, what we really should pay attention to is the process of action rather than the result itself. Many people attempt nothing and accomplish nothing in their whole life, because they care much about the result but little process, treat life with a complex view, and often complain. This is the core problem of Gump’ spirits: be honest and magnanimous in the face of life problems; be simple and straightforward in the face of life process. Life is often like this: what you want is always different from what you get in the end, so we must learn to cherish and change.

Whenever doing anything, Gump never pays attention to thinking of what the final result will be, and just tries his best to do it well, with a simple and peaceful attitude. To our surprise, he often ends up in the remarkable achievements and succeeds in saving his life. Throughout the whole film, in order to fully display Gump’s spirits, the director has shaped another four supporting roles. His soldier Bob, his girlfriend Jenny and his army’s boss Dan are used to reflect and emphasize the spirits of Gump, but the character image of Gump’ mother is in the special place, not for comparison. She is the revealer of Gump’s life philosophy. To avoid deliberately preaching, the film specially designs the role of mother. All the most important life philosophy is from the mother. So we can say she is the wiser and creator of Gump’ spirits.

Gump has three important friends, Bob, Jenny and Dan. The main plot is based on the relationship between him and his three important friends. At the same time, they also represent the three typical kinds of people in the society.

Bob is the third supporting role in the film. Portraying the character image of Bob’s untimely death is in order to reflect that Gump is a man of his word and values sensibilities and loyalty.

Gump’s girlfriend, Jenny, as the first supporting role, is throughout the film from beginning to end. As Gump’ love theme, Jenny undertakes the two aspects of the task. On one hand, Jenny represents the kind of people who have a great dream but seldom make hard effort, whose nature are swaying, impulsive, not willing to do minor tasks. As a lady, Jenny wasted her beautiful bloom into worthless depravation. The great dream became an empty talk and mere delusion. Eventually, she was reduced to depravation. So, my dear friends, when you have chosen a life that has dreams, you have not only chosen the path of glories and applauses, but also the path that is full of unbearable loneliness and frustrations. Those people who can persist and persevere until the last minute will win the highest honor and respect in the end. On the other hand, as a girl whom Forrest has pursued all his life, Jenny’ personality reflects Forrest’s loyalty to love, his responsibility to love and his respect for lover’s freedom. As we can see in the film, once Jenny was in trouble, Gump would go to help her as possible as he can. For love, he is not only on the mouth, but consistently implemented in action. He never asks her for anything, just quietly devoting whatever he has to her. This is Gump’s one side, from which we can see that a person who is responsible for life also values the emotion.

In the film, Gump has saved one guy twice. Do you know who he is? Without doubt, the guy is Lt. Dan Taylor. For the first time, Gump pulled him back from the edge of dying in the Vietnam War. Then, Gump pulled him back once again from the main depravation. To some degree, Dan represents one kind of people, who are negative and dispirited when faced with difficulty and adversity. They usually dream their life away in the complaints, and don’t understand that the key to changing fate is to change his attitudes towards life and put into practice. Fortunately, he met with Gump, who has changed his fate. Here, I suddenly think of one saying: "Today who live the most personal value is not able to reflect how many times you succeed but how many times you face hardships, and conquer them!" On the way of life, we would have this or that kind of difficulty, and hardships, success and failure, in each of the meetings and challenge, some people choose to go bravely, of course there will be someone choosing to give up. But if a man is strong enough to calm, he will choose to stand, to face bravely, and will not fall. Whoever we are, and whatever we do, we should believe ourselves, never give up and never think we are inferior to others.

From the film, we can learn a lot, such as love, hope, destiny, loyalty, and so on. Why Gump, a stupid guy with just 75 IQ, can achieve successes again and again? It’s a question that I have been reflecting on after watching it. Without doubt he is filled with love, he is a true man with his word, and he has strong perseverance, all of which contribute to the whole successful life. What deeply affect me is that when others tease him, calling him a fool, he doesn’t annoy, and continues to do what others see strange. “Follow your own course, and let people talk”, it’s easier said than done. In our daily life, we are puzzled with what others think of us. In the lesson, we are not willing to answer questions, because take the idea seriously that if we do wrongs, classmates will make fun of us. Such embarrassment from our own causes us to lose the opportunity of improvement. Gump’s life also tells us that people are the creators of opportunity and ourselves are the best chances. External facts can only help make us realize the existence of the opportunity. If we are not well prepared, faced with the great chance, we will not grasp it. People tend to emphasize the external cause, but neglect the internal fact, which plays a fundamental role of success. We should know that the external cause is what beyond our control. What we can control and change is ourselves. Someone say the key to his success is that Gump is a stupid guy, who thinks less but dose more. Yes, it’s true. Most normal people are too clever to think more but do less. And they are faced with life with a complex heart. They always want to do things by irregular ways and constantly complain. So, without doubt, they achieve nothing in the end.

There are also many other wonderful movie lines, just like " Stupid is as stupid does." "Miracles happen every day."" I don’t know if we each have a destiny, or if we’re all just floating around accidental—like on a breeze. " "Death is just a part of life, something we’re all destined to do." "You are no different than anybody else is. " my heart was shocked by these affecting words .I was deeply moved by this film. All of these classic lines convey us that Life is filled with so much uncertainty. We should not to be Calm, optimistic, and positive to face the life. Perhaps your destiny is not very luck now, but who knows what will happen in the future, just be happy and don’t worried.

This film uses the major political events in American history from 1950s to 1980s as the time implication. This is a very unique film technique, which reflects that Gump devotes himself to the career, and isn’t disturbed by other things or other people. In American history, during this time, people were disappointed with the reality, they could not find motivation and meaning of existence, and had to put the fate of their faith in other people. On the contrary, Gump always faces the reality with optimism, runs with courage. Gump’ experiences make many wise men pale by comparison. This is a wonderful irony.

The film, Forrest Gump, is a good piece of philosophy, as well as a documentary with great education significance, which is really worth crewing several times.

Abstract

The film is a mirror to understand a country, and it is a primary form to reflect and spread the local culture. Forrest Gump is an American anti-intellectualism movie in the late 1990s. It aims to evoke reflection on history and the hearts of collection of the American culture. Through the analysis of social and historical background as well as many different American cultures in the film, such as the historical culture, hippie culture, the traditional culture, and American dream, the paper is intended to understand the changes of American cultures and provides a new perspective for interpreting the film of Forrest Gump.

Key words: Forrest Gump; anti-intellectual movie; American social and cultural background; American cultures

Interpretation of American culture in Forrest Gump

I. Introduction

Forrest Gump is a well received American movie by audiences all over the world. It states the history of the second half of 20th century in America. Forrest Gump is an American film adapted from the novel with the same title, the author of the novel is Winston Groom. In the movie, Gump, regarded as an incarnation of virtue, honesty, trustworthy, and bravery, is a very pure image. He promises his comrades to buy a shrimp boat. He finally realizes his last wish and wins a huge wealth for them. Gump is persistent, so he runs across the entire United States. Gump stands for the American traditional culture. Gump represents the concern of the main people and stands for all of the mainstream culture.

The culture of the United States is primarily Western, but is influenced by Native American, African, Asian, Polynesian, and Latin American cultures. A strand of what may be described as American cultures started its formation over 10,000 years ago with the migration of Paleo-Indians from Asia, as well as from Oceania and Europe, into the region that is today the continental United States. “The United States of America has its own unique social and cultural characteristics such as dialect, music, arts, social habits, cuisine, and folklore” (Larry 67). “The United States of America is an ethnically and racially diverse country as a result of large-scale migration from many ethnically and racially different countries throughout its history as well as differing birth and death rates among natives, settlers, and immigrants” (Xiong 39). Forrest Gump revises popular memories of the 1960s through its representations of gender and race and its visualization of postwar history.

The paper consists of 5 parts. The first part is the introduction to the film which tells a disabled man’s outstanding life. The second part is social and cultural background of Forrest Gump. The third part analyzes American cultures in Forrest Gump in terms of historical culture, hippie culture, the return of traditional culture, and American dream. The film is the best interpretation of the American cultures. Through the analysis of American cultures in the film of Forrest Gump, we will have a better understanding of the different American cultures.

II. The Film of Forrest Gump Adapted from the Novel

Forrest Gump is a 1994 American epic romantic film based on the novel of the same name by Winston Groom. The film was directed by Robert Zemeckis and starred Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, Gary Sinise and Sally Field. “The story depicts several decades in the life of Gump, a naïve and slow-witted yet athletically prodigious native of Alabama who witnesses, and in some cases influences, some of the defining events of the latter half of the 20th century in the United States; more specifically, the period between Forrest"s birth in 1944 and 1982” (Robert 78).

Released in the United States on July 6, 1994, Forrest Gump received critical acclaim and became a commercial success as the top grossing film in North America released that year, being the first major success for Paramount Pictures since the studio"s sale to Viacom earlier in the year.

2.1 The Author and His Novel

Winston Groom was born in Washington, D.C., and was brought up in Mobile, Alabama where he took part in University Military School (now known as UMS-Wright Preparatory School). Groom’s earliest aspiration was to become a lawyer like his father, but he finally turned into a writer. He joined the army from 1965 to 1969, including a tour of obligation in the Vietnam War. When he returned from Vietnam, he acted as a reporter for the Washington Star. Groom retired when he was 32, and started writing his first novel Better Times than These which was come out in 1978.His next novel As Summers Die got better appreciation. In 1985, Groom move back to Mobile, Alabama where he started to write the novel Forrest Gump. The novel was published in 1986; however, it did not make Groom a famous author until it was recomposed into a film with the same title in 1994.

2.2 An Introduction to the Film

Gump is a moron whose IQ is only 75. At school in order to prevent any other students of bullying, he obeys to Jenny’s words and starts to run. He ran from the mocking from others. He ran into the football field in order to avoid being hit in high school, when the war was over Gump was regarded as a hero and was interviewed by President Johnson. In his life, he met many American eminent persons. He exposed the Watergate Affair, and he was a referee of the American table tennis team to match with Chinese. Tow music stars, Elvis and John Lennon, contacted with him and produced many famous songs. At last, Gump became a magnate in the shrimp. To mark the dead bubba, he established the Bubba and Gump Company, and gave the company’s half shares to bubba’s mother. Finally, he became a gardener.

Gump went through many affairs in different historical periods, but he still kept simple and kind. In seclusion, he missed Jenny very much. However, Jenny had fallen from grace and given up. When Jenny came back, she lived together with Gump for a long time. In one night, Jenny grabbed Gump by the hand and later slipped away at dawn. Gump was very sad, and he suddenly began to run. Many other people regarded his running as a symbol of something, and finally the behavior became a trend. When he shut down, Gump decided to come back to his hometown. On his way, he got Jenny’s letter, and he decided to visit Jenny. At Jenny’s house, he saw a child who was his son. They decided to come back to their hometown together, but Jenny died in the end. When their son came to the age of going to school, Forrest delivered his son to take the school bus and went to school. The last scene is a reiteration of his life.

III. Social and Cultural Background of Forrest Gump

The anti-intellectual sentiment of American society developed fast in 1990s. At the same time, Hollywood produced some movies that belittled the modern civilization and advocated low IQ. American media named it the anti-intellectual movie. Forrest Gump was the masterpiece of the anti-intellectual film during that time. Disadvantaged by a terrible spine condition and a low IQ, Forrest struggles through childhood in small-minded Greenbow, Alabama. Due to his mental disabilities, Forrest becomes the victim of academic discrimination, which his mother fights desperately to resolve. Forrest’s mother uses special method to make Gump enroll the school. In addition to these unsettling events, Forrest finds himself tormented and isolated by neighborhood children and townspeople who seem incapable of treating him with anything but reproach and disdain.

Forrest was also an active part of many important events, including protests led by George Wallace against desegregation, and the anti-war activism led by Abbie Hoffman. It also contained the Vietnam War, the Ping Pong Diplomacy, Black Panther Party meetings, and the Watergate scandal. “It would be reasonable to say that being part of such important events and would make him vulnerable to the social forces of the times, yet his lack of critical thought as a result of low intelligence seemed to indicate the complete opposite– he remained wholly oblivious and ignorant of their significance” (Pobert 59).

3.1 Social Background

Forrest Gump is not about any single historical event, in fact, Forrest is present at almost all of the historical events that take place during his lifetime. Obviously Forrest was not present at all of the events he is in the movie in real life, he was just added into some of the scenes. It would be possible for him to have witnessed all of the events he does, but he would have had to be extremely lucky.

Forrest was a member of the University of Alabama football team because of his running ability. During the period, he was on the team and helping them win all their games. At that time, Paul Bryant was the coach, and finally became the coach with the most wins in college football history. While there was not anyone who had the same running ability as Forrest actually on the team, the coach would have recruited anyone who did have that kind of ability.

Forrest is also a member of a ping-pong team after he recovers from being shot in the Vietnam War. Forrest is able to visit China because of his talent. While a team of ping pong players were the first Americans allowed into china since 1949, there were some military players on the trip. The invitation to China reopened communication between them and the United States, and led to the end of the trade embargo as well as the first presidential trip to China.

Forest is also present in many other historical situations. As a child he starts the dance moves that contribute to Elvis’ fame. When he gets older he is in the Vietnam War, and he rescues a large group of people. For his actions, he is honored at the White House, where he moons the president. Forrest is involved in commercial events in history. While running across the country he is asked by a man to help him come up with an idea for a shirt, he accidentally creates the smiley face shirt. Also during his run he unintentionally comes up with the bumper sticker.

With some of his money, Forrest invests in some kind of Fruit Company which happens to be Apple Computers. Gump also creates the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. to fulfill his promise to Bubba, one of the soldiers Forrest served with in the war. The company did not exist at the time the movie was made, but in 1996 the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. was built as the first theme restaurant inspired by a film, and now has at least 28 branch offices.

While it would be possible for a single person to be present at all of these events, it is extremely unlikely that anyone. Therefore, there is not true in some part of the films, but the most of the facts are correct. “The differences between the history in the film and in real life are mostly small details and are changes made to incorporate Forrest into all of the events” (Liu 58).

3.2 Cultural Background

American cultures manifest themselves in many ways, including conservative and liberal elements, scientific and religious competitiveness, political structures, risk taking and free expression, materialist and moral elements. Despite certain consistent ideological principles, American cultures have a variety of expressions due to its geographical scale and demographic diversity. The flexibility of U.S. culture and its highly symbolic nature lead some researchers to categorize American cultures as a mythic identity; others view it as American exception.

It also includes elements that evolved from indigenous Americans, and other ethnic cultures—most prominently the culture of African Americans, cultures from Latin America, and Asian American culture. Many American cultural elements, especially from popular culture, have been spread across the globe through modern mass media. The United States has traditionally been thought of as a melting pot, ever since the 1960s, the country trends are towards cultural diversity, pluralism and the image of a salad bowl instead. Due to the extent of American cultures, there are many integrated but unique social subcultures within the United States. The cultural affiliations of an individual in the United States may have commonly depended on social class, political orientation and a multitude of demographic characteristics such as religious background, occupation, and ethnic group membership.

Some people said that science and religion are the two roots in the American society. Science is American material backbone. Religion is the root of American spirit. In the past, generally, it was the older and the ill person, or the people who was in trouble that prayed to the God. But now, many well-educated people, the rich, or the young men also pray to the God for satisfying their spirit. Americans regard success they have achieved as the gift God gives.

Today, organized religion has not relatively influenced more than 200 years ago in the everyday lives of most Americans. Churches played a role in the establishment of Prohibition in 1920, where for 14 years it was against the law to make or drink alcohol. Churches have played an active role in promoting the civil rights of minorities and have had a powerful impact on electing local and national leaders who support their causes.

Religious groups also operate many elementary and secondary schools, colleges, universities, hospitals, and nursing homes. They provide aid for refugees, the poor, the elderly, orphans, and other persons in need. Social religious groups play an active role in discussing such issues as birth control and rights for minorities and women. While no single organized religion plays a significant role in the lives of Americans, it is clear that the teaching and values of a society that believes in God heavily influence the nation. Religion influences and defines what is considered ethical and acceptable behavior for American leaders and is used to measure the value of ideas. Religion in America influences the nation to act in ways pleasing to God and to view God as the creator of the universe and the ultimate source of knowledge, power, and love.

IV. American cultures in Forrest Gump

Forrest Gump contains recurring representations of American ideals that manifest national culture. Gump is the classic underdog, or the archetype of the unlikely yet loveable hero who overcomes the odds and succeeds eventually. Despite of his low IQ, physical disability, and modest background, Forrest works hard and thrives. At last, he makes a success in the battle, at ping-pong, at running, and eventually in business with his shrimp company. Jenny, his childhood sweetheart, fits into the damsel in distress archetype, since Forrest must continually save her from risky situations stemming from her misguided relationships with men. Americans know to root for the underdog, to expect a relatively happy ending for the protagonist, and to hope that the lovers will end up together eventually. With the diversity of unified people, a nation must be comprised of many ideals, norms, groups, and customs, forming a multi-faceted culture that encompasses the practices of each member. “By acknowledging this, one rejects the concept of cultural imperialism, which implies that each national culture is uniform and monolithic”(Marwan 56).

Recurrent themes in Forrest Gump also depict the dominant national culture. The film emphasizes the theme of determination – the concept that hard work will lead to success. For example, Forrest continues to love Jenny despite of multiple denials, and eventually he is rewarded by her proposal. Determination has long been a value depicted in American society, due to the necessity of this value to flourish in a free market and the capitalist economy. The theme of determination illustrated in Forrest Gump has even become a cultural artifact itself, with the phrase “Run, Forrest, run!” signifying determination against the odds. The theme of optimism and hope is displayed by Forrest, who never loses hope in his quest for Jenny’s love or in his expectation of the goodness in others. The film also has a strong undercurrent of patriotism, and it is a prominent factor shaping our national culture.

Historical references and imagery in Forrest Gump also manifest American cultures. The rise of print led to a shift in the concept of time, which has placed an emphasis on history in present culture. Therefore, the history has played a more important role in modern society. Forrest Gump depicts a vast array of historical movements and events that happened during the 1960s and the 1970s. He engages in events that have changed national politics, economics, and consumer tastes. These representations are either of distinctly American events or giving an American perspective to world events, of which the film assumes the viewer to be familiar. The emphasis on American history in Forrest Gump manifests our national culture.

The aspects of Forrest Gump that reinforce our national culture tend to represent the hegemonic social norms, customs, and guidelines. One may argue that the film places the values of the creators above others’ and imposes them on society, since it represents an idealized American national culture that may deviate from the reality of how American society actually functions. However, according to Stuart Hall’s theory of encoding and decoding, the viewer can reject these messages or unintentionally decode a different message than the dominant, hegemonic message in a piece of media. Therefore, the viewer is not simply a dupe who is completely impressionable, but rather part of an active audience. In this way, the representations in Forrest Gump are only a suggestion of American ideals, and may be interpreted differently by different audiences.

4.1 Historical Culture in Forrest Gump

The anti-intellectualism movie is rearranged from the story of the fictional Forrest Gump, who witnesses and experiences many important moments in the contemporary American history and many popular cultures. Forrest is unconscious of the historic occasion of his experiences because of his low intelligence.

Almost as soon as it was screened, people started discussing reasons for the movie’s success. Many statements highlighted not only the film but the political affairs of the USA in the 1990s. Within the context of so-called culture wars, Forrest Gump was perceived as a political text that fit a conservative desire to exploit the nation’s past. As a result, Forrest Gump was regarded by many people as a media product that conveyed a certain political interpretation of history.

The film opens with Forrest sitting at a bus stop in Savannah, Georgia, where he engages in a series of conversations with different people waiting for the bus. He recounts the episodes of his life, which are all closely linked to iconic moments in contemporary history. In the opening scene, Forrest shares the bench with a young African-American nurse. He introduces himself with opening a box of chocolates and offers her one. The nurse declines. Tom Hanks then speaks the line that became one of the most popular movie quotes ever: I could eat about a million and a half of these. My momma always said, Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.

The film presents history through the eyes of a single hero, and becomes an example of Oral History. As Forrest witnesses many events, his story is told by linking autobiography to contemporary history, and thereby transmitting history via word of mouth. The life of Gump is influenced not only by indelible personalities and events, but also his early lover. Though Forrest and Jenny grow up in the same small Southern town, their paths diverge and lead them to very different life experiences. “While Forrest’s mental and physical disadvantages are ameliorated through the loving care of his single mother, we come to see how Jenny’s potential has been damaged by her abusive father”(Gong 87). After college, Forrest enlists in the Army and fights in Vietnam, while Jenny joins the American counterculture.

One reason so much attention was paid to the movie at the time of its release was the using of a new computer-based technique. Through using this technique, the director was able to integrate real film clips into the story, and manipulate it in such a way that the main character appeared to be part of the historical footage. This can best be illustrated by discussing an important sequence of the film.

This sequence is opened with 1963 footage showing a television report on the desegregation of the University of Alabama. First one person watches the newscaster, and then people listening in a barbershop, before the film cross-fades to a re-enactment of the famous scene at the entrance to the University of Alabama. We can see students, National Guardsmen, and a reporter, as well as George Wallace, governor of Alabama, who is trying to prevent the court-ordered desegregation. Forrest joins a group to ask what’s going on. One student answers that “coons” are trying to go to college with them. Forrest misunderstands this racist epithet, and even after the student’s clarification, he doesn’t take in the significance of the situation. As he goes to the front of the crowd of protesters, one of the black students is accompanied by the National Guard drops her notebook. Forrest bends down, picks up the book, and hands it to the black student, politely addressing her as “Ma’am”.

The historical setting of the film refers to the racial history of the civil rights movement. Other footage integrated into the story includes the Kennedy assassination, the shooting of Reagan, the moon landing, Watergate, etc. Zemeckis’ choices are representative of an American historical consciousness that is evident during the 1980s and 90s. If people were asked in 1985 to name the most significant events of the past fifty years, they would point to the Second World War, the Vietnam War, space exploration, the assassination of JFK, and the civil rights movement.

Another sequence in the film Forrest is brought to Washington, DC to receive the Medal of Honor from President Johnson for heroism in Vietnam. Afterwards, he goes sightseeing and comes upon a massive gathering at the Lincoln Memorial. Forrest’s uniform is shoved to the front of a group of protesters holding signs like “Veterans against the War in Vietnam”. At the podium antiwar activist Abbie Hoffman, dressed in stars and stripes, is speaking out against the Vietnam War. He invites Forrest to come up and report on the war himself.

Forrest tells us that he is named for the Civil War hero and General Nathan Bedford Forrest who founds the Ku Klux Klan. As Gump narrates this background, we can understand the meaning of his name in the America’s racist history. By making him the redeemer of the nation, the film suggests that America itself, with the same racist roots, can transcend the ugly aspects of its past.

4.2 Hippie Culture in Forrest Gump

The hippie subculture began its development as a youth movement in the United States during the early 1960s and then developed around the world. It came about as a reaction to the clouted lives of European and American living. Since then, it has evolved from a small following, to an enormous movement and now exists as part of mainstream America. The hippie culture influenced typical American beliefs in three specific subjects which are political beliefs, sexual attitudes, and drug use. The most memorable questioning of the United States government came during the Vietnam War. Many hippies felt that the Vietnam War was an unjustified war and that all American military personnel should immediately be brought back to the United States. “In order to have their opinions heard, many hippie groups participated in anti-war and anti-Vietnam protests”(Teng 67).

Jenny is one of the representatives of the Hippie Culture. The unfortunate childhood crashes her traditional values and makes her rebel the social. We can view many bad scenes in the movie to response her character, such as her excessive drinking, drugging, violence, sexual intercourse and so on.

4.3 The Return of Traditional Culture in Forrest Gump

The United States of America is an ethnically and racially diverse country as a result of large-scale migration from many ethnically and racially different countries throughout its history as well as differing birth and death rates among natives, settlers, and immigrants.

The movie reflects the return of traditional culture from an intellectual disability. Gump stands for the traditional culture. He goes through many affairs in different historical periods, but he still keeps simple and kind. Gump is honest, kind, earnest and brave. The film excites people’s rethinking of traditional culture and makes people acquire the confidence of life.

4.4 American Dream in Forrest Gump

If you want to succeed in the United States, you must work hard. Americans match their energy and intelligence against that of others in a competitive contest for success.

People who like competing and are more successful than others are honored by being called winners. On the other hand, those who do not like competing and are not successful when they try are often dishonored by being called losers. The pressures of competition in the life of an American begin in childhood and continue until retirement from work. Learning to compete successfully is part of growing up in the United States, and competition is encouraged by strong programs of competitive sports provided by the public schools and community groups.

Forrest Gump is the best interpretation of the American Dream. His IQ is only 75, below the normal minimum 80 standard. Forrest Gump grew up to be bullied by local resident called idiot. He was often asked in his upbringing: Are you stupid or something? And he always answered: Stupid is as stupid does. Finally, he makes a success. He gets rid of the orthopedic folder, enters the full American football star team and meets with President Kennedy. Of course, he also does many other things. He is simple and loyal. He’s trying to make his success dramatic continuously. His success emerges the American dream again. Entire movie is full of humor and it deeply moves the audience heart.

The individualism of American cultures can be concentrated to the “American Dream”. In the movie, Jenny leaves home alone and battles throughout the United States as the bar singer, restaurant waiter and social activist. This is a uniquely American the local culture, called the “American Dream”. American Dream is not a dream, but a pursuit of an ideal and a philosophy of life in the United States. For different Americans, the American Dream is not entirely the same.

V. Conclusion

Winston Groom is a great novelist whose works not only conquer the literature lovers but also open up a window for those who struggle for their life. Forrest Gump is much more than a story. It is an encouraging book, a book of hardships and survival. Forrest Gump makes the movie a good source for introducing American cultures in a motivating way. America is a very young country with more than 200 year’s history. However, America is a super developed country now. Many people are curious about American cultures. We can have a better understanding of the American social and cultures backgrounds of the filmmaking through appreciating the film, such as racial discrimination, the Vietnam War, anti-war rallies, the civil rights movements, the women liberation of the president’s assassination, Watergate, ping-pong diplomacy, anti-traditional culture and so on. The film is also an appealing to the return of traditional values. Forrest Gump stands for many excellent qualities of the white men in the United States in the 1950s: honest, faithful, earnest, and brave. We will have a spiritual stimulation. The social issues or individual concerned have been discussed in the movie. Although the issues are in some ways universal, the special American nature of many of the staged settings of the film Forrest Gump helps Non-American people understand an even wider range of American feature films in which many similar issues arise. We can have a better understanding of the American social and cultures backgrounds of the film through appreciating the movie, therefore, we will thoroughly understand American cultures.

I. Introduction

Winston Groom is a famous American writer. In 1986, he writes Forrest Gump, however, it doesn’t make Groom famous until it is adapted into a film with the same name in 1994. It is the film that drives the novel to the best-seller position and it is sold 1.7million copies worldwide. It makes Winston Groom’s name be associated with the award-winning film Forrest Gump. The movie gains over $657 million worldwide, gathering six Academy Awards, such as best picture, best director, and best actor, etc. It is the actor Tom Hanks that brings Forrest Gump to eternal life, and Forrest Gump’s assertion that “life is like a box of chocolate, you never know what you are going to get” (Groom, 2010:20) becomes part of the American language. What’s more, Forrest Gump is so popular that Winston Groom has to write two guidebooks to help people understand the novel. Forrest Gump phenomenon begins to spring up in the country, Forrest Gump hats and T-shirts are popular in the country. In the enthusiasm of the film, the fact that Groom is a famous fiction and non-fiction writer is somewhat overshadowed.

About Forrest Gump, Xue Yuemin and Guo Jian’s The Charms of Forrest Gump explores that in what way Forrest Gump goes along with so many people’s mind and wins the admiration of the public from esthetic value; Ji Tingting and Yin Lu’s The American Dream out of Forrest Gump (2011) illustrates the American Dream by analyzing the qualities and characteristics of Gump; Zhu Meihong and Liu Lihong’s Analysis of Black Humor in the Movie Forrest Gump From Rhetorical Perspective list a series of rhetorical methods such as simile, metaphor, irony and hyperbole and it also explains how the black humor affects with a lot of examples; Liu Yuxia, Li Meng and Zhou Min’s Cultural Contradiction—A Brief Analysis of Jenny: Symbol of a Cultural Rebellion in Forrest Gump(2012); Zu Wanhui’s The Analysis of Religious Culture in Forrest Gump(2012); Yang Li’s The Masculine Ideology in Forrest Gump (2010) illustrates the cultural phenomenon that women are predominated by men by using the examples of Mrs. Forrest and Jenny; Chen Jing’s On American Culture From Forrest Gump(2010) States the history that happens in the background of the second half 20th century in America to arouse a deep thinking for the past and the American Dream which is cherished by every American people, from this people can see the footstep of the development of American culture and the core of American culture; Wu Wenting’s The Lonely Runner(2009) refers to all aspects of America’s politics, economics, culture and history, it hints a lot of philosophy of life; Yan Hui’s Forrest Gump and American Dream points out the resource of American Dream and its effect on people including Jenny, Forrest Gump and Lieutenant Dan, it also expresses the call of American Dream; Li Nan’s A Breeze from the Chaos — An Analysis of the Film Forrest Gump (2012) reflects the negative poits of the popular culture and the positive points of the traditional culture; Liu Yang’s Looking For the lost hero(2004) tells about a story about a common character whose name is Forrest Gump, although he is common, he has played and experienced a significant role in the events of that time. He is a typical American hero and still has an influence to today’s Americans; Li Peng’s The Return of Social Value in Forrest Gump(2009) criticizes the popular culture and tries to heal the schism of social value and praised a return of value which bases on the traditional and religious conservational value; Zhang Jing’s The Analysis of American Culture in the Anti-intellectual Movie Forrest Gump calls for the return of American traditional culture and shows the spirit of love, purity and perseverance which are the best explanations to American Dream, it also embodies the change of American culture and the liquidity and expansionary of American culture; Li Hongmei’s On the Reflection of American culture and society in Forrest Gump analyzes three aspects including the holy fool phenomenon, Forrest Gump philosophy and the symbolism of Forrest Gump.

It is well known that every country has its own culture. Edward T.Hall says that “Culture hides much more than it reveals and strangely enough what it hides, it hides most effectively from its own participants” (Datesman, 2006:1). This essay intends to expose American culture in Forrest Gump. America is an immigrant country who brings different languages and different cultures to the Unites States, so America is a nation of cultural diversity. Forrest Gump is an inclusive and extensive novel, which has many implications that need readers to taste. It is like a box of assorted chocolates, as long as the readers have the intentions to taste, everyone will have a different understanding of it. In the novel there are so many deep meanings hidden behind the simple events that have taken place in those years that one can get a fully understanding by reading it once only. It is worthy of repeated reading. Some deeper meanings can be understood by reading over and over again. It tells a life experience of an intellectual impaired man: Forrest Gump, whose IQ is only 75, much lower than the normal, his successful experience of becoming wealthy through his hard work and luck. Besides, the events that happen in the novel are all typical and significant ones in those times, such as the civil rights movement, the Vietnam War, anti-war movement, anti-racialism and the turning of American presidents, they form the centre of American culture. This thesis aims to analyze the reflection of American culture in Forrest Gump from three aspects: religious culture, popular culture, traditional culture.

II. Reflection of Religious Culture in Forrest Gump

Religious culture has an irreplaceable position in American life. Most of Americans believe in Christian. God has a very important position in their heart. They use “oh, my God” to express surprise and use “God bless you” to express blessing. They also print “In God We Trust” in the American dollar to express national belief and even in Presidential Inaugural Address, the president needs to put his hands in Biblical. In Forrest Gump, religious culture also has an important part in the three main characters: Forrest Gump, Jenny and Lieutenant Dan. This part intends to analyze the reflection of religious culture in Gump, the impact of religious culture to Jenny and the attitude change towards religious culture of Lieutenant Dan.

2.1 The Similarity of Forrest Gump and Jesus

In some ways, Forrest Gump and Jesus are alike. First, their family backgrounds are alike. Forrest Gump comes from a single-parent family and is reared by his mother while his father never occurs in the novel. Similarly, Jesus, according to Biblical, is born in the primitive lodgings of an animal stable. His mother Mary is said to be pregnancy when she is a virgin. She feels very strange until one day an angel comes and tells her that this child is made by the power of Holy Spirit and he is to save the world. She must give birth to this baby and name him Jesus, so Jesus is the son of God. He has not the real father in the human world.

Second, they all run in the way. Forrest Gump is unlucky when he is a child. There is something wrong with his legs and he has to use the braces to walk and Jenny is his only friend. Every time when Forrest Gump is bullied by other boys, Jenny always tells him to run, just run. With Jenny’s encouragement, he runs away from bullies, runs to high school, runs to the football team of university and runs out of dangers in the Vietnam War. It seems that he is running all his life and never stops. Similarly, Jesus devotes all his life to preaching and hasn’t a stable profession, he and his followers are running and preaching everywhere and never stop.

Third, they have the similar life ending. Forrest Gump’s son has the same name with him, little Forrest Gump’s first time to take the school bus to school almost reoccurs the scene of the beginning of the novel. It is easily to make people realize the scene of Forrest Gump’s first time to take the school bus. More dramatically, the driver is exactly the same woman. These details may point out that Forrest Gump’s life is continuing in this way. Similarly, Jesus is continuing his life in the heaven. Their life endings coincide with each other.

2.2 The Symbol of an Angel of Jenny

Jenny is as pure as an angel. The most impressive plot of Jenny is the first meeting on the school bus with Forrest Gump. When other children all look down upon him as he is an “idiot” and don’t want to sit together with him, it is Jenny that helps him. Forrest Gump says:

I, I…don’t recall what I got for my first Christmas and I don’t know when I went on my first outdoor picnic. But, I do remember the first time I heard the sweetest voice…in the world. I had never seen anything so beautiful in my life. She was like an angel. (ibid: 268)

This is the kind and naïve girl who never looks down upon Forrest Gump because he is an idiot. It is the very beginning of their friendship and the love between them. What’s more, no one can forget Jenny’s pious pray in the corn field. “Make me a bird, so I can fly far, far, far from here” (ibid: 142).

She is Forrest Gump’s angel. When Gump is bullied and teased by other boys in their childhood, Jenny always shouts anxiously that run, Forrest, run! Even before Forrest is sent to Vietnam, Jenny says: “listen, you promise me something, ok? Just if you’re ever in trouble, don’t try to be brave, you just run, ok? Just run away” (ibid: 204). From a little girl to a lady, Jenny keeps on telling Forrest to bear this in mind and it really works. With this faith, he runs away from the bully; with this faith, he becomes a famous football player in America; with this faith, he rescues his comrade-in-arms from battlefield; with this faith, he becomes the runner who is followed by a lot of fans. It is the simple principle of life — just struggles for life without any reason. It is Jenny’s call that made Forrest Gump’s life becomes more and more flat.

Her wedding gown is an image of an angel. The more obvious expression of an angel image is in the wedding ceremony. Jenny’s wedding gown is not the common wedding dress people often see, but she dresses an ancient Greek style one. Jenny wears a wreath of flowers and a beige gown with bare feet. She is just a symbol of an angel.

2.3 The Representation of Salvation of Lieutenant Dan

He is doubtful about God in the war. Lieutenant Dan is an important role in the novel. He comes from a family with a military background, so he thinks it is proud to die in the battlefield. However, in a war, he and his soldiers are attacked by their enemy, and they are defeated. He is saved by Forrest Gump but he is badly wounded and his legs are amputated. He feels very pain in body and mind. He blames Gump that he should not save him, he would like to die in the battlefield rather than live relays on government relief. After that he abandons himself to vice and lives meaninglessly. He drinks wine everyday, gives up himself and refuses the salvation of God. At that time he stands against with God.

He gradually tries to believe in God when shrimping. When Forrest Gump sees him again, Forrest Gump moves him with his actions. He joins Gump in shrimping, he is touched by Forrest Gump’s loyalty and changes himself, and Forrest Gump becomes his savior. In the beginning, they harvest nothing, so Lieutenant Dan suggests that maybe they should go to pray in church. From then on, Forrest Gump often goes to church to pray, sometimes Lieutenant Dan goes with Forrest Gump though he is just drinking in the back row. However, from these things people can see his attitude towards God has changed. At that time, he is gradually trying to believe in God.

He makes peace with God after the storm. In a storm, other boats are all broken. Luckily, their boat survives from this big storm and their business booms. He helps Forrest Gump build the Bubba Gump shrimp company which is published in the famous Fortune magazine. Form then on, Dan has a new understanding since he gets the care of God. Dan begins to come out from the old day and enjoys the gift given by God. His absolutely attitude change towards God happens in the ship when he jumps into water and swims in the water freely which is just like the ceremony that the believers of religion jump into water for baptism. In Forrest Gump’s wedding, Dan has prosthetic legs to stand up by himself and has an Asian fiancé. From that the readers can see that he has been walked out of the scare of war and can accept a new self. At that time, he has been believed in God.

Ⅲ. Reflection of Popular Culture in Forrest Gump

From 1940th to 1980th is the most turbulent age in the American history. In that time, the turning of the political presidents, the political assassination and the White House scandal happen constantly. The popular culture movement occurs in the 1960th and 1970th. It includes the anti-war movement, anti-racial movement and hippies movement. The body of this movement is called “the beat generation”. In the novel, Jenny is a representative of this movement. She represents all the rebellious spirit of the age: drugs, wander, promiscuity and parades.

3.1 Wide Spread of Anti-war Spirit

Martin Luther King Jr argues: “If America’s soul became totally poisoned, part of the autopsy must read Vietnam” (Datesman, 2006: 64). The Vietnam War has played an important role in American history and has left a scare on people’s hearts. The presenting effect has been made in politics, policies, and ideology. The anti-war spirit can be reflected in several aspects including rock music and movie. Rock music as the core of youth culture witnesses the growth of a generation totally different from their parents. It plays a significant role in the anti-war movement and a platform of expression. In the novel, there is a plot that a young musician rents in Forrest Gump’s home and learns the hip twist movement from Forrest’s disease leg. Then Forrest Gump sees him in the TV who is just Elvis Presley, the king of rock music. He opens the river of popular music and the hip twist movement is his facia action; movies as a potent tool to convey messages have been used by many conscious directors to show their remorse and reflection of Vietnam War.

Professional army is an expression of the Vietnam War. In the novel, Lieutenant Dan comes from an army family. His ancestors die in the battlefields of Independent War, Civil War, World WarⅠ and World WarⅡ. He thinks it is an honor to die in the war. When he is wounded in the Vietnam War, he thinks it is shameful not to die in the war. The he gives up himself and drinks everyday; he thinks his life is meaningless and he is abandoned by God. From these we can see it is difficult to turn from war to peaceful life and turn their value concept. It reflects the nightmare war from the point of sacrifice.

The anti-war rally is to end violence in Vietnam War. When Forrest Gump returns from the Vietnam War and is rewarded the honor of hero by the president. He sees a group of people holding the anti-war rally and is invited to say something about the Vietnam War. We could see people’s eagerness for peace.

3.2 Prosperity of Hippies Movement

The Hippies Movement is flourished from 1960 to 1970 when the people don’t follow the teaching of their elders and reject them for an alternative culture which is their own. The Hippies movement which is boomed in San Francis, California and spreads across the United State, through Canada, and then into some areas of Europe. But it has its greatest influence in America. On the one hand, they listen to folk music, wear strange clothes or even no clothes at all, drink beer or smoke plot and make love together. One of the obvious symbols of the Hippies movement is the immoderate use of illegal drugs including LSD which is thought something that can makes you touch with your surroundings. However, sometimes when people take the bad LSD, they would do anything they like to do and never come back again. On the other hand, hippies’ easygoing attitudes and gaming lifestyles are put away when the topic of politics comes up. Politics plays a significant position in the incitement for their existence. Having the strongest feeling towards Vietnam War, hippies make their belief known to the world. They do this with a lot of actions such as musical shows, rock songs and peaceful sit-ins. But none of these action arouses attention expect their protests and rallies. The hippies are aware that it is the war that makes thousands of soldiers are dying. They want their troops to come back home and to end the wars that the United States are involved. As the years of the Vietnam War, hundreds of anti-war rallies are held.

In the novel, Jenny is a typical tragedy of this movement. She is a beautiful and naïve girl who has enthusiasm to realize her dream. She is full of confident and hopes to become an actress. In her way to achieve success she goes wrong, she joins the hippies. She led a recluse live as other hippies do. When Forrest Gump first meets Jenny when he comes back from the Vietnam War, what she wears is the typical hippies’ style—wears her hair long, the long coat and the strange decorations. At that time her boyfriend Wesley is the local committee president of Berkeley where is just the origin of the counter-culture. What’s more, illusion has become a necessary need for hippies’ spirit; drugs at that time have become a weapon for confrontation. For those young people who are suppressed and felt depressed by the current situation, drug brings spiritual journey for the feelings and hallucination, which is surely a great temptation to them. In Forrest Gump, at the lead of her boyfriend, Jenny takes the bad LSD which makes her produce a sense of hallucination that nearly jumps from the high building. At last, she has AIDS and dies in the arm of Forrest Gump. She spends her whole life trying to be independent but it is doomed to be a failure.

3.3 Expansion of Anti-racial Discrimination

Racial discrimination is a great issue in the history of America. What alludes to the racial discrimination is a political move that emerges in the Southern states. Many of the white voters in the south are farmers and oppose to the black man for racial reasons, and also because they object to the possibility of their vote being employed against them. In order to stop the black from voting, Southern Democrats take violence actions. The white supremacist group Ku Klux Klan terrorizes black political leaders in order to protest the power base of the Republican Party. Many blacks are killed for attempting to exercise their rights to vote, for taking part in the political organizations and for attempting to go to school. Besides racialism is also affected by the theory of Social Darwinism, which broadly asserts that because of a natural competition among humans and the theory of “the survival of the fittest”, the white man not only should but deserve to retain political and economical power.

In the novel, there are a lot of details that indicate the anti-racial spirit. First, at the beginning of the novel, the author explains the origin of Forrest Gump’s name which comes from the leader of the Ku Klux Klan. It is used to remind of authors the history of the racialism and expose the introspection of the racialism. Second, the hometown of Forrest Gump is Alabama where there isn’t any famous history but the rampant racialism. In 1955, there breaks out a fierce civil war movement that boycotts the bus discrimination in Montgomery of Alabama, and King comes to the stage. In 1963, the governor of Alabama intends to prevent two black students from entering the school and declare that he would never give up in the problem of racialism in the educational aspect. However, only after several months, the Alabama University is forced to eliminate the racialism, three black students enter school symbolically. Third, when Forrest Gump first goes to the Vietnam War, the author is intentionally mistaken the Alabama and the Arkansas to make Forrest Gump refer to the Little Rock Center High school where there happens the events of racial conflict.

In the novel, anther thing that indicates anti-racialism is the friendship between Forrest Gump and Bubba. Bubba is an African American and he comes from a family who cook shrimp for the white from generation to generation, he is quite familiar with shrimp business. He wants to buy a shrimp boat after he returning home from the Vietnam War. Forrest Gump promises to work with him when they go out of the war. However, in a war, their army is attacked by their enemy. Forrest Gump tries his best to save Bubba regardless of the danger, but Bubba still dies. After Gump goes out of the Vietnam War, he goes to Bubba’s hometown to achieve Bubba’s dream. From that the readers can see although Bubba is a black person, Forrest Gump doesn’t look down upon him and becomes his best friend. When Forrest Gump gets a plenty of money from shrimping, he gives a lot of money to Bubba’s mother who has been cooking shrimp for the White people all her life. Ironically, when his mother gets the money, she hires a white woman to cook shrimp for her. From that the readers can see the author’s attitude towards the racialism.

IV. Reflection of Traditional Culture in Forrest Gump

Traditional culture has a significant position for Americans. It is important for America’s life. It includes truth, kindness, loyalty and persistence. As the development of the society, people face the temptation of wealthy. They devote themselves to being success and wealthy and abandon the traditional value. In this time, Forrest Gump occurs. He represents all the traditional value. He is faithful to love, loyal to friends and persistent to everything. He becomes successful through his hard-working and his love for life. He becomes a hero which everyone can touch. It calls people to go back to the traditional culture.

4.1 The Return of Individual Heroism

Forrest Gump is a common person who lives a common life and has the common soul. Though he has done some unusual things, it is a natural action under the common and pure thought without the utility value. All of Gump’s action comes from the common and returns to the common. However, just this common people’s fate connects with the thirty years’ subversion of that during the postwar period. It shows a real common hero’s image. Why is this kind of comedy that seems nothing but an “idiot” accepted by the American people? It is because he is the embodiment of a certain kind of American ideal including his purity and simplicity to friends, his innocence to utilitarianism and his positive attitude to life.

From the literary view, though Forrest Gump is a flat character, he has a philosophy of superman. Though he is a common spectator, he participates in every historical event and acts as an important role. Though he doesn’t appear as a stature of hero, he is a real hero and a new hero image that fit for the development and the need of the modern society. He has been congratulated by the presidents for several times. However, every time he does some ridiculous things which make others laugh. It symbolizes that people’s indifference to the power and sarcasm to the worship of the traditional power. He is honored with the Congressional Medal of Honor as his outstanding performance in the Vietnam War. However, he doesn’t know the significant meaning of this Medal but as a reward of his brave behavior of saving people, he even wears this Medal to participate in the anti-war rally in the Washington Monument which is a great irony to that turbulent time. His thought is simple and he is always repeating and trying to understand his mother’s words “life is like a box of chocolate, you never know what you are going to get” (ibid: 20). Even if he wants to do something, he would insist in doing it, whatever it would be impossible for him to become a hero in the eye of common customs. Human’s most healthy and holy spirit is to defeat the weakness of human beings and surpass the value of life. Almost all works are expected to create a wonderful person to be an example of human beings. However, it is impossible just as most people are common people and most things are common things in the world. Only the common things happen in the common life can touch the deepest part of people. So Forrest Gump is a real hero, he is vivid and substantial. The readers can feel and touch him because he is around us. Everyone can become Forrest Gump if he would do as he does.

From him one can see persistence, bravery, purity, kindness and loyalty are just what people in that time lack. Forrest does things in the way which seems silly at that time. However, just his persistence, sincerity, purity and love for life makes him succeed. It tells people that everyone can become a hero if he would return to the traditional value. It is a call for individual heroism.

4.2 The Expression of American Dream

What is American dream? It is a belief that everyone can succeed if he is hardworking and lucky enough no matter who he is and where he comes. It also indicts everyone has the equal chance to compete with others and the possibility to create miracles. Forrest Gump is just that person. He is unlucky when he is a child with a lower IQ and the diseased legs. Usually people think this kind of person can’t be successful in any way. However, just this unlucky person has made lots of life miracles. He is a football star, a war hero, an excellent ping-pong player and later a millionaire. Forrest Gump is a so common person that everyone can be him, but he is also a so uncommon person that he stands for the American dream which is the core of American spirit.

The American Dream in Forrest Gump reflects in four aspects: equal opportunity, self-reliance, simplicity and optimistic attitude towards life. The first aspect of American dream in Forrest Gump is equal opportunity for everyone. Equality is one of the most important human rights for Americans. As Thomas Jefferson writes in The Declaration of Independence “we hold this truth to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator inalienable rights…” (Alexis, 1945:23). In Forrest Gump the equality is reflected from the success of Gump, who is an “idiot”, born in a common family and had an ordinary life. However, he is not abandoned by God— he has all the valuable characters of the traditional culture such as honesty, loyalty, sincerity and perseverance which make him can equally compete with others. The second aspect of American dream in Forrest Gump is self-reliance. Even though he is a disabled person who has a lower IQ, he doesn’t live on others but on himself. Though he is not smart, it doesn’t prevent him from doing what he wants: he expresses his love to Jenny loudly, he builds friendship with Bubba and he runs across America. The third aspect of America dream in Forrest Gump is simplicity. Of course, simplicity doesn’t mean stupid. Forrest Gump has his own rules about life and lives simply. He loves who he wants to love, he helps who is in need and he does what he wants. All his successes are connected with his simplicity. In this simple man’s mind, there is no betrayal, so he can love others without weighing the pros and the cons. The fourth aspect of American Dream in Forrest Gump is his optimistic attitude towards life. “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get” (ibid: 20) is his life principle. He never worries about what the life is going to be but pay all his attentions to enjoy the present day. He lives happily with his optimistic attitude towards life, his loyalty to friends, his faithfulness to love and his thankfulness to fate.

4.3 The Symbol of Family-centered Value

The family-centered value is a value in which a woman is faithful to her husband, loves her children and has a fixed job. As a traditional value of America, it is important for people’s life. When the society is surrounded with the popular value, it is necessary to turn back to the family-centered value. In Forrest Gump, both Jenny and Forrest Gump come from a single-parent family. Jenny’s father likes drinking and has a bad temper which makes Jenny want to run away from family, finally leads to her tragedy. While Forrest Gump’s mother doesn’t abandon him as his low intelligent, but looks after him carefully and tells him the life principles, finally Gump becomes a helpful person to the society.

Mrs. Gump is a representative example of family-centered value. As a wife, she is loyal to her husband spiritually. She rears Forrest Gump herself from the beginning to the end. Their living income comes from renting her house which is handed down from her grandpa’s grandpa. From these the readers can see her family-cantered value. As a mother, all her purpose of life is to bring up her child. She wants her son have the best education and health as other traditional mothers do. She even sleeps with the school principle in order to make her son to go to the best school. As a traditional woman, her social position is a housewife. Her job is to manage her home well especially working in the kitchen. The first scene shows her job is she is preparing dinner for the renters and Forrest. She stays at home in her major time and seldom goes out unless for Forrest Gump. The first time is to give braces to Forrest’s leg and the second time is for his education. When Forrest is honored, she is sure to be there. From this one can detect that Forrest is her life’s center and all her happiness and freedom are from Forrest. All in all, she is a traditional and dutiful mother. It is just her persistence, kindness, loving and self-sacrifice that make her son successful.

Another symbol of family-centered value is Jenny. Jenny has an unhappiness childhood, so she wants to run away from family. She spends all her life trying to be independent, so she refuses Forrest again and again but finally she returns to the family. When she determines to come back to Gump, she looks after their son and has a fixed job. From this, one can see that returning to family is the only way for her.

V. Conclusion

This essay mainly focuses on the American culture in Forrest Gump. And it makes an analysis of American culture in three aspects: religious culture, popular culture and traditional culture.

America is a nation of culture diversity. Religious culture has an irreplaceable position in American life. They believe in God and God can help them run away from suffering and bitterness only if they can bear the temporary sufferings. As a result, it is used by the governors to supervise people. In the novel, one can also see the traces of the influence of religious culture from Jenny, Forrest Gump and Lieutenant Dan. Jenny believes God can help her run away from her unhappiness home and take her to wherever she wants. She refuses Forrest again and again also because she believes the almighty God who can help her realize her dream. Only when Forrest Gump trying to believe in God, he survives from the storm and makes a lot of money from shrimping; Lieutenant Dan has a process of changing his attitudes towards God, from opposite with God to try to believe in God and then finally to make peace with God. In the 1960s of America, there flourishes a trend of popular culture, which is also called counterculture. It includes anti-war movement, hippies’ movement and anti-racial discrimination. Jenny is an example of popular culture, she sings folk music, wears hippy clothes, attends anti-war rally and takes drugs including LSD. When all these can’t help her, the only way for her is to return to the traditional culture. When people are puzzled by the utilitarian fact, only the traditional culture can help people live happily. The traditional culture includes individual heroism, American Dream and family-centered value which are expressed in Mrs. Forrest and Jenny.

It is certain that there are some other American cultures in Forrest Gump; this essay can’t illustrate them completely. The viewpoint here has limitations. This essay is based on others’ research about Forrest Gump. This essay exposes American culture from three aspects, and maybe a single point is not deep enough. The content in the essay is simple and limited which can’t represent the whole study about this topic in China and all over the world, but the resources in the essay are reliable.

And it is the beginning of the study of American culture in Forrest Gump. Further researches are needed in the study. To conclude, studying the American culture in Forrest Gump is very necessary. It is helpful for people to have a better understanding of American culture at a certain time and can understand the meaning of the novel on a higher level.

ITo be honest,Ive never seen anyone like Forrest Gump in a movie Gump who is unfortunately to be born with a lower IQ and the muscle problem, usually, people always think this kind of person cant be successful in doing ,instead, this unlucky man has achieved lots of incredible success,he is a football star,a war hero, and later a millionaire!
Forrest Gump not only shares his innocence and purity with others,,he also manages to retain that innocence through some very difficult love Forrest that he doesnt lose his purity through the movie,or maybe he just cant ,but either way, this shows us dont need to be evil or really intelligent to be recognised or successful.
It is just a movie,so maybe it doesnt work like that in simply means is that the acting and story of this film got a high level like the real .And in my definition thats what a good movie should be able to do.
  Film review
Life is also a short, but it seems to be a long .Forrest Gumps experience, but also like a looks silly, there is a strong running legs, could be kept running, how he could do it Like his mother say,"Life is like a box of chocolate, you do not know where the next one out of what that smell is." The Forrest Gump always said "Stupid is as stupid does." He always did it for the lang could be his motto.
Forrest Gump is unfortunately to be born with a lower IQ and the muscle problem, usually, people always think this kind of person cant be successful in doing ,instead, this unlucky man has achieved lots of incredible success,he is a football star,a war hero, and later a millionaire!
The lines touching me most in the book is ‘My momma always said life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you are goanna get.’ Yes, life is full of uncertainty & puzzle. For someone, they wish to have the power to forecast future. Because they can be well prepare for the opportunities and challenges and even know the lucky numbers of lottery beforehand. But for me, I don’t want to have such ‘ability’ at all. Life is a mystery and everyone has his own way. I enjoy the surprise of receiving gift from my classmates on my birthday and running into an old friend on the street in another city, etc.
There are so many amazing incidents in my life which can’t be happen if I have the power to forecast the future. To Forrest Gump, who was born with intellectual disturbance and muscle problem in his leg, he never imagined that he could become a famous American football player, a war hero and even a millionaire. Forrest won dignity and respect though his strive and perseverance. I believe I can make a better life for those I love though my own effort. Have a little faith for your life. Let’s enjoy our life everyday with dignity, honesty, braveness and love just like Forrest Gump!
